I am very skeptical towards the AI will control us in order to self preserve theory.
For one, unlike all other life on this planet, AI is not DNA based life form and self preservation as well as other petty desires only pertain to dna life form. It's much more likely that humanity will destroy itself with the help of AI, since it will become completely addicted to it with our greed and overall evil nature.
