My comment will focus on Hinton's "Final message" about joblessness being his answer to the greatest threat to human happiness. He may very well be right in aggregate. But his worldview is absolutely shaped by his obsession with his work. I am a researcher and have been a programmer for 20 years. I've trained multiple agentic models to write software identically to how I write it. I have absolutely no fear of automating my professional work. I have painting and sculpture and woodworking and metalworking and architecture and gardening and my small arboretum and equestrianism and bushcraft and fishing and motorsports and the violin and family that give me far more purpose than my actual professional accolades.
His answer is spoken by someone who is afraid to retire because his entire life is wrapped up in an obsession. I know him. I know dozens of him. I never wanted to be him, so I didn't become him.
