a UBI would have to gradually be introduced, as more and more jobs get removed by automation. Because eventually a large population would become unemployed as any possible job will be done my a machine, even maintenance of machines will be done by other machines.
But you don't want to introduce it too fast or increase it too fast to create unemployment just from people who don't want to work.
