I believe consciousness is fundamentally non-computational. No matter how much processing power you add, AI will never be conscious—because its foundation is PURELY software. Consciousness, in my view, can only emerge from nature, specifically from biological life. To be conscious is to be alive. This leads me to think that the universe itself might be alive, and therefore conscious. How could all life within the universe exist inside something that is itself dead? That seems incoherent. Instead, I suggest that even atoms possess a rudimentary form of consciousness—not in the human sense, but as a basic, intrinsic feature of reality. A single neuron is not conscious. But billions of them, arranged in the right way, give rise to a sentient being capable of consciousness and self-awareness. In a similar way, I believe that all the atoms in the universe, taken together as a whole, are not building up to a cosmic mind—rather, that cosmic mind already exists as the fundamental reality. The cosmic mind experiences life through every living form in the universe. Our brain functions like an antenna. The brain is not a factory where consciousness is manufactured. It is an aperture through which the cosmos glimpses itself. Damage the aperture, and the image distorts—but the light was never inside the aperture to begin with. And when the aperture closes, the light does not die. It simply shines elsewhere.
