Lidar and other systems confuse the system and require much more computing power. The most important part is the development of the software to interpret the data properly. Waymo's system doesn't work for a consumer product unless you sell it for dramatically more than a normal person can afford. I drive a 6 year old Tesla and it does almost all of my driving. It's almost perfect and when it's not it's still not dangerous. I should still pay attention just in case. I can see how that won't be necessary on the new hardware very soon.
