At the beginning, Musk made it clear that it's Autopilot, as in "like a plane autopilot". A pilot will not leave is seat alone...
Nowadays, that distinction seems to not be as promoted as before, and it's a huge issue. Autopilot is a cruize control with some benefits. Since people are unable to figure it out, all autonomous vehicules projects should be banned for now... It's not worth the risk for now.
