I have an interesting use case on AI art you might appreciate. I have a hobby project where I have created three entire expansions of Magic: the Gathering cards, which is well over 800 individual cards, each with their own art. I would love to use real art, but trying to find appropriate commercially-free images is time-consuming, involves shoving a lot of square pegs into round holes, and sometimes turns out to be nigh-impossible. I did have someone contribute two pieces of original art to the project, which is on display. The rest are filled in with AI art, which I think of like placeholders that are prettier than having a blank art box or stick figures. The art generator I use is Microsoft's Bing image creator, which is currently free to use. Sometimes I clean up the pieces in MS Paint with my meager skills by cropping, squishing, deleting, and hand drawing the pixels a little, other times I just take the art as it is.
Some takeaways here are: My project will always be free, I cannot charge money for it, and the parent company Hasbro / Wizards of the Coast doesn't care about so-called "playtest" cards as long as you don't charge money and don't try to pass them off as real. The AI art was for creation on a large scale, hundreds of pieces, that would never turn any profit. What I'd like to know from you is, do you believe this is a reasonable use case for AI art? I certainly think it is, considering there is no money to be made and the cost to create it otherwise would be unapproachably exorbitant.
