Fortunately curretn AI is still pretty narrow and dumb as a brick. It does not 'want' anything as a car does not 'want' to drive. It just mindlessly does what it is built to do.
The problem with current AI is, that we often do not take the time to carefully understand the machine we built and thus surprises ensue. A blackmailing AI does not know what blackmailing is, or even what words even mean. It is just very good at predicting the next following word in a sequence.
There have been some very interesting new papers on measuring actual intelligence of current transformer models and the results are very clear.
