AI is both a threat and gets rid of even worse threats, that is why it will happen. Positives: Without AI it is unlikely we will be able to cure disease before a major human extincting disease arives. Without AI it is unlikely we will solve space travel before our planet become uninhabitable. Without AI it is unlikely we will be able to travel fast enough to escape the expansion of the current universe bubble we are trapped in. Without AI it is unlikely we will be able to stop very large asteroids from causing extinction events. Without AI it is unlikely we will be able to restart food system collapses. There are more but I would like to move on to the negatives. Negative: AI can be used for autonomous weapons including drones and nukes. AI can hack defense systems. AI can be used by bioterrorists. AI can decide we are not needed and by time we figure out it doesn't want us we won't be able to stop it's plan to eliminate us. The negatives are unlikely to happen if there are enough humans training the system in the correct direction, and the positives are imperative for human survival.
