"Gary Marcus is a leading voice in Artificial Intelligence" Haha absolutely not. He is best described as a mascot. Ask any of the top names what they think of his views. This guy does not have a lot of authority and has views rather out there not shared by the field, he has some private interests in those views (he basically thinks neural networks will never work and has his own company), has rather little scientific backing of those views, and has been proven wrong numerous times. Most of the points he raised in this hearing are fine and he certainly does seem more restrained here and more sensible than in some other topics, but the problem is when it goes beyond that, or what he does not raise - such as this insane leap that the cost of production dropping would lead to lower value for consumers - the expectation is the exact reverse. There are a lot of respectable researchers out there working on AI safety who can present that perspective. How did the Senate fail this hard in selecting a guy like that for a committee? He is only representing himself.
