Yann LeCun studies with Geoffrey Hinton in 1987, where they perhaps discuss Convolution Neural Networks. Yann creates LeNet soon after, but doesn't make progress because the chips at the time were too slow. In 2011, Hinton unites with Ilya Sutskever and Alex Krizhevsky to make Alexnet, but now they have Nvidia GPUs, so suddenly CNNs start working. That was the beginning of the realization in Silicon Valley that scaling was the key to progress. As Ms. Hao says, Sutskever helps found Openai, and contributes to the development of Chatgpt using massive scaling of GPUs.
