Fundamentally this isn't replacjng anything. As you said, it's sloppily rehashing older, better work, and because it's definitionally worse than the original, if all artists stop and only AIs are generating art any more, it'll either stay as bad as it is by never retraining, or it becomes exponentially worse as it retrains on sloppy AI art (a study recently showed that the "breakdown due to AI-generated ouroborosing" occurs way sooner than expected)
