Well the main reason AI won't turn conscious isn't because of the benefits of lacking consciousness, it's because all AI is is a fancy word for math formulae based on Linear Algebra and Fast Fourier Transforms. Math can't gain consciousness. Now what it could do is be made to act conscious, and then we'd have a philosophical debate about whether it's really conscious or not (think a Turing Test), but until we actually make artificial brains and use them to power robots or devices, the idea of AI becoming conscious is just the plot of science fiction, not science reality.
