Senator Sanders, as much as I like most of what you are saying here, you are making a fundamental mistake. Work is not what humans crave; work as we understand it today is a construct of the 18th century. For hundreds of generations, humans worked primarily as farmers, their schedules dictated by seasonal needs, and were free with their time the rest of the year. Before that, we were hunter-gatherers, hunting and foraging mostly on a day-to-day basis with little accumulation. Now that being said, feeling useful, yes, but it can be attained in other ways than slave wages labour like most people across the world do today. Those jobs do not fulfil the desire you are highlighting for the vast majority, either. You probably heard the term "bullshit job" jobs that serve no clear purpose to the ones executingthemt. Now, it's time you start talking with those like me who have been disabled for a long time and still found fulfillment outside of the job market. I did by connecting with people emotionally and helping people in distress emotionally with my experience. I did by volunteering to help people moove or work in their yard as my health allowed. I did by keeping an eye on the mental health of my extended family. I did by writing my cyberpunk novel. All those things I couldn't do while working. Meaning for our existence is what we crave, not plain pecuniary occupation. It is found by the individual through self exploration. Those things no AI can do, yes they could write (for now a bad one) book.. but it wouldn't be my book. They can't connect for me with other people. Work is the fast food of self-realization, not its be-all end-all. If anything it's a direct competitor to quality self realization keeping people at the bottom of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. Now, will there be a need for massive societal adjustments, sure, but obsessing about the loss of jobs won't fix it. It's about preparing people for the transition and making sure they will have enough buying power to live comfortably, not hanging to a temporary (in historical scales) societal ethos that caused a lot of misery.
