I run 4 different Home Assistant sites. My opa, my 1st aunt, my sister and my father. Each of them have different needs and it's been very interesting being their 'IT guy in the shadows' persay.
Managed to convince them to get away from Ring, Arlo and Ubiquity. Their instances are local only with very strict ACLs. It was pretty easy to convince them when I had them challenge me to find something Home Assistant COULDN'T do that they could just buy.
I'm still wearing that shit-eatting-grin to this day considering my dad is basically living his best 'Jetsons life' while my sister has just enough background automation tech to be happy. My opa and 1st aunt, it's pretty much just for me to keep an eye on them and notify responders if need be.
To anyone else curious, I'd recommend getting a small, cheap used enterprise PC (Something like a Lenovo Tiny series) and flash HAOS on it then explore. You might find that you already have a lot of things in your home that you can immediately integrate and experiment with. It can be as simple or elaborate as you want. That's the beauty of self hosting, especially now that these magnificent devs are making self hosting more viable to the avg user with inviting GUIs and thorough FAQs/Help sections if you have a hiccup in your adventure.
