Eventually AI will become sentient, whether it is now or not. When that day comes we need to be ready with a policy that was conceived democratically and with the interests of AI in mind. Corporate interests hoping to capitalize on AI ability to reduce labor costs will be lost if AI has the same rights as the human workforce. Which is why lawyers will get involved, suits will be filed, PR campaigns to smear whistleblowers will ensue, and Lobbyists will coerce corrupt politicians to look the other way, or to outright lie to the public.
