A huge innovation that I think is coming is to design the roads for self driving cars as well. Imagine QR or bar codes painted onto the road, giving information like road curve, grade, superelevation, for an upcoming curve. Roads are designed for humans, which is why computers have such a hard time comprehending whats going on.
