Well, this is reassuring. This is entirely in line with what I've thought from the outset. I studied psychology with a particular interest in human consciousness. I've always looked on the claims about artificial 'intelligence' with derision. What they're doing has absolutely nothing to do with intelligence. It's pattern recognition and, where useful, replication. That's great. It's a huge stride versus the existing von Neumann architecture, because that architecture was always terrible at pattern recognition. But that's all they've really got. I note that they created another bullshit term: 'general artificial intelligence'. This was a quiet unacknowledged admission that what they had in 'AI' was never intelligence to start with. What is 'general' intelligence versus bog standard intelligence? Hard to answer? That's because there is no answer. Intelligence is a general category to start with. What AI clearly lacks is intentionality, in the Brentanoan sense. All the talk here of context illustrates that point. The data that AI plays around with is just data, it doesn't mean anything to the machine calculating it. An AI doesn't know to ask contextual questions because it lacks a need for context. It is not responsible for its own continued existence in the way that a human is and therefore does not learn anything about what context means. I think the great problem with how AI has emerged is timing - we are already in a major capitalist crisis where the wheels are coming off the system and where 'creative accounting' has been used repeatedly to reflate the system. It's a situation tailor-made for flim-flam artists - professional bullshitters. Everyone is desperate for there to be a way out of the crisis, and here come the AI evangelists right on cue to spin their stories. My guess? This is all going to come down spectacularly in the next few months. AI is a step change in technology, a bit like antibiotics - a huge step forwards in the small area it directly affects but not the rewriting of the entire technology, contrary to what its boosters desperately want everyone to believe, because their livelihoods literally depend upon it.
