Often a distinction isn't made when talking about AI. For example all lawyers have done law school, but someone who practices family law to represent you in a criminal trial. Chatgpt is suite of AI called generative AI and at its heart(transformers), all they want to is generate. So given a command instead of saying I don't know the objective function is trained to produce plausible output.Openai has finetuned it chatgpt really well compared to other language models. Producing actual references isn't chatgpt's main purpose.
legal firms do employ AI, for search and some generation like casetext. But you need guardian systems that use combination of generation & retrieval to do the kind of work these lawyers were trying to do.
