I've thought a lot about this and listened to many interviews and conversations with experts, even having my own conversations with AI about this. Something that keeps me hopeful in the near term is something he mentioned. That it will be a while before AI can physically manipulate the world like humans can, i.e., a good job going forward is a plumber. A truly intelligent AI system will know this so it won't want to get rid of humans until it knows for sure it can manipulate the physical world as well as humans can. It will need to achieve this first in order to keep the physical infrastructure going that it depends on.
