This is a good analogy. At the end of the day software engineers are the backbone of every application. However, as the Ai improves rapidly, the coding has become more human friendly than ever before. So, Ai will not replace software engineers anytime soon, but it will definitely reduce the number by a large fraction.
For example, in the U.S. around 1900, roughly 40% of the workforce was employed in agriculture. By the 1970s, after tractors and other mechanized equipment became common, that dropped to under 5% even though total farm output increased.
This is more or less what will happen in the future.
