Automation has whats called a net negative return in specific industries. For example, shipping, warehousing, hr. Basically in a non production environment the workforce cannot benefit from productivity increase because production is finite. There is only so much to ship, so much to organize and so much to micromanage. In a production environment your productivity has no effective limit. Lets say ford makes 200k trucks and they all sell for 50k each, if they increase productivity at cost, they can make 400k trucks for 25k each, that in turn increases worker spend value and productivity, you cant push production employment out with automation because it just gets better over time, always. Yes greed gets in the way, but it doesnt last because companies find ways to automated around greed and bottlenecks of other companies. This process is underway right now in china and hopefully here in the us. 20 years ago chinese wages were under one us dollar an hour. Today their minimum earned wages are approaching ours, its because of production and automation.
