I just took a class, 20th century art history. It was a fascinating look into “How did we get from the art world as it was (realism, historical paintings, renaissance, etc) to the art world as it is now(Modern art, the banana on the wall, odd performance art that many ppl make fun of, etc)?” The DADA artists especially posed the question: what makes something “Art?”
At the end of the course, I finally came to my own conclusion: Art is not just an object, or a method, or an action, but Art is a Conversation. It’s a conversation between the world and the artist, the artist and the medium, the artwork and the audience. It is a conversation from one art movement to another— arguing with each other, riffing off each other; it is a conversation between critics, analyzing and gushing and scrutinizing.
A.I. can make images, but it cannot contribute to the conversation by itself. It cannot make art because it has nothing to say. That is something it can never take from us.
