I see some possible good from this and the horror of some hugely overlooked elements. I am a white woman who accidentally stumbled into black communities in Sacramento and LA and some of the the more horrific elements of black arrests and sentencings. It has become somewhat commonly shared knowledge that you can be arrested, (at best), for the crime of "driving while black". What I believe to be far less known is that many, many, many black men are arrested for the crime of "annoying a police officer, or causing him/her to stop and engage in serving the public." This crime is 8 times out of 10-- (OK, I'm only going by personal involvement and family stories, and not technical research, but PLEASE, BRING IT ON!!)-- AN AUTOMATIC FELONY!! I could give you a long list of what those annoyances might look like. And God forbid there should be some form of mental illness involved!!! Also, in the courts where these crimes are tried, there is basically NO serious questioning of the viewpoint of the arresting police officers, including by the public defenders. If you are black, you have to be ready to PROVE you are innocent, and since most of the pubic defenders are "tied in" to the system, that proof will probably only be able to come through a family member--most of which have too long accepted that there is only danger in confronting the "system", because no legal person appears to listen or care about their truth. I'm telling you, many, many of the felony charges, (AND THEREFORE guilty sentences) are at worst misdemeanors, infractions, or even out and out lies--no crime at all was committed. I'm not simply trashing police. Many are fine people, dedicated, very , very helpful people, important to communitities. I'm just not sure about how many of them work in the neighborhoods of the people of color, without massive bias towards these folks. So basing any scientific algorithms on these kinds of "previous arrests" is good only in that it COULD reduce SOME of the incarceration, but it does not address the horrific quality of the arrests now being made, and, therefore, how extending these arrests would largely continue the injustices already being done.
