Humans are also machines are they not? Life did not start off conscious, it took an increasing amount of complexity to become so. In that sense can't an AI become conscious? If we increase the complexity, add pain and pleasure, abstraction, AI should be able to become just as conscious as humans if not more. its certainly possible for an AI to become a feeling creature...
