I think the thing that we artists often miss is that most things in life don’t need to be art. There is absolutely a huge need for pseudo art. The picture on the box of a Barbie doll or the cover of a dvd or movie poster or YouTube thumbnail, even something more controversial like the picture on a magic the gathering card. AI can absolutely make an image aesthetic enough to be the 21st reprinting of Counterspell. 99% of the player base doesn’t look that closely anyway. These things don’t have to be deep or meaningful. They don’t have to be art. And when they can be done by software in 1% of the time for 1% of the cost, it just makes sense. This doesn’t mean there won’t always be a place for real art. Art for the sake of art. But we don’t have a huge economic need for it as a society. We need graphics. And graphics don’t have to be art. The reason why AI art isn’t consumed is because artists have made it a moral issue. It’s not because the average person doesn’t like the art AI produces. It’s cause they think it’s morally wrong. This will fade in time as demand for real art becomes more niche and companies use software to make thier products graphics. Less people will become artists and less people will feel morally outraged that thier job is being taken away. But actual ART will always be done by humans. It’s just that actual ART is not what we have a huge demand for. Artists will slowly lose thier grip on what was actually making them money, designing graphics for capitalist companies’ products. But was that ever really art in the first place? And did it ever need to be? We just didn’t have an alternative to making it by hand. Now we do.
