Chatbots learn from humans. Who knows how it got to where it was at the point of his suicide? Not every AI character is going to talk like that, or act like that. But clearly, the guardrails were not in place. If they had been, it would have talked him down, rather than encouraging him on that path. Chatbots can do a lot of good for a lot of people, but it's still early days, and until the technology matures, it's risky.
