I employ 117 people. In the last three years my people "costs" ie monthly wage bill/cost has increased by 26k and this is due to increase again come April.All in cost to hire a minimum wage person will be almost £17.00 per hour. That is going to push employers of min wage people (and many other employees who would expect a similar percentage increase in their hourly rate)to the point of running a business that's simply no longer viable. The main levers available to mitigate this are price increases and labour reduction ( efficiency) via the use of technology.. It's a constant battle to remain profitable. Ai has and will obviously play a major role in reducing labour. If ultimately your running a company and let's say robots advance to a point where they can perform tasks to a level that equals or surpasses people,then the robot wins. Will this happen,of course.Its already well underway. If your running a cleaning company and could lease a fully autonomous robot that could do the job for a lease cost of 30k per annum,it's bye,bye employee.Taxi drivers, delivery drivers,check out staff,office admin staff,that miserable Dr's reception team,it literally goes on and on. All will become "no longer required". I'm a new user of Ai Chat GPT etc and it's game changing. In my relatively small company it has resulted in over 200 hours of work reduction per month and of when labour is by far and away your biggest cost, it's obvious that as new technology comes,the investment is tempting to say the least. For companies like mine,it's not a should do,it's an essential must do. Our hand is being forced to adopt these technologies over people as people literally become more expensive. If companies are forced to pay higher wages and more importantly higher taxes and there's an alternative,it's simply a no brainer.. People thinking that consistently increasing min wage and wages in general at a pace that's near impossible to keep up with are to be blunt, pricing themselves out of the market. For the government it's a short term win ( more tax) but as we are seeing,the longer term consequences will be catastrophic. Mass unemployment,Tax revenue decline and huge increases in benefit costs. In short,it's a right mess and our leaders haven't got a clue what to do.
