The Expanse University has an interesting realistic take on a future society. It recognises that a lot of labour will be automated but some people will still need to work. So society is effectively split into two. Rather than giving unemployed people money which could be lost through gambling or drugs etc, they just provide basic versions of everything you need for free. You get a free apartment with printers that can make clothes and food etc from standard basic designs. There are even free bars serving basic beer. But if you want to buy anything fancy then you need money and to get that you need a job, and to get a decent job you need to be educated. But they decided that it wasn't worth educating everyone to uni level if most people weren't going to work anyway so to qualify for university you have to prove you are a hard worker by doing a job like waiting tables for a certain amount of time. Of course anyone is free to study independently just because they want to or to create art or whatever. But since billions are free to do that you can't get money that way. Some people see it as some kind of communist dystopia or something. It is presented in the novels in a way that seems a bit dark and oppressive. But frankly it's so much better than things could be that I think it would be great to live in a world where all your needs are met and you're free to do what you want with your time.
