I don't understand how this is any different from using a reference when creating your own art. It's literally the same thing it's just thousands of images rather than a handful. But a person using somebody else's art as a reference doesn't warrant any sort of crediting and it certainly doesn't bring copyright issues into the fold. So why do we have a double standard for AI? Is it just because they use thousands of images as a reference? I think the volume of images is irrelevant. Every artist on the internet that I've seen, uses other artists art as reference. You can go into mental gymnastics as to why it's "different" but I think conceptually it's the exact same thing.
