The problem with the question about the crossroads being 10 years or 20 years out, is that the transformation is already happening now and it will grow every single year in increments. Massive unemployment of the middle class and all the lost wages will begin altering our civilization long before the 10 year mark. The technocrat billionaires keep selling the lie that AI will do all of the heavy lifting while you spend every day at beach. Is anyone actually believing this nonsense? We are going to have to find a way to transition into a cashless society, and make all AI systems public utilities and property controlled by the government with plenty of independent oversight.
The other reason we have to change the way we treat AI development, is due to what adversaries can do to us with an open source code process. No one is working harder on this than China.
This 1-2 punch of job elimination and global security needs to be taken far more seriously than how elected officials are treating it now. When they hear “20 years” it means they will do absolutely nothing at all.
