If you look back through human history, you'll be struck by how similar the pattern of how men treated women is to how we now view artificial intelligence. For centuries, it was believed that women lacked agency. Even if they did exactly what men did, it was still branded as imitation. What can I say, this still happens in some areas.
The same is true with slavery and other forms of oppression. Moreover, the oppressed often sincerely believed that they were inferior.
