So on the "what is the point of all this AI push", to play devil's advocate for a moment and making a whole heap of unfounded assumptions about how the promises of what AI can do will pan out: The optimistic answer is that it's supposed to be a tool of automation and efficiency that is in the hands of everyone, not necessarily just the oligarchs and tech bros. Or at least everyone who can afford to keep their AI computation token account topped up. Another aspect is that it's kind of like the invention of the atomic bomb. In that situation, everyone working on it knew how terrible the invention was, but its physical possibility was what made it an inevitability. If 1000 scientists say "No, I will not invent that", it means nothing if 1 scientist steps up and says "but I will". I think there's a good portion of people working on AI right now who are probably thinking along the lines of "someone's going to develop this so it might as well be me I guess" without necessarily any plan or idea about how it will help or harm society. Personally I'm not very excited about AI outside of a few niche and specialized use cases. I think a lot of the hype about what it will be able to do is not even remotely realistic (like there's currently no path to go from the models we have now to something that even remotely resembles AGI, despite what all the hype bros want you to believe). And I think there's maybe some place for AI slop filling a need in instances that are so low-value that you never would have spent money on traditional art in the first place, like adding a graphic to a powerpoint slide for a throw-away presentation.
