I've wondered if consciousness comes from the interaction of the brain with the digestive system. After all, brains only evolved to help the metabolism and reproductive systems. Originally, they had no other purpose. Just because brains are the most important thing in human consciousness, does not mean it's the only component. If so, it might be that AI won't feel its existence until AI can generate its own energy, and to rely on that energy to keep running.
