I agree that not only trucks but also cars need to become self driving but... 1) Truck drivers need to be retrained for jobs that pay similar wages. 2) Liability for accidents needs to migrate to the companies designing the software and the vehicle. THEY are the ones driving, not the guy that bought the vehicle. 3) Highways and other roads will need to be upgraded to make them safer for self-driving. Vehicles need to communicate with the highway and with other cars so that they know each other's intentions and be ready to compensate. 4) MOST IMPORTANT: We need serious personal data privacy laws. Plus extremely strict data security laws. These vehicles by necessity report all data to the company operating them and by choice to the company that makes them. Currently they sell the data about us to anybody they want, making us and our habits the product they sell... this must be 100% forbidden, the laws need to be even stronger than the EU's GDPR law. On the security side, this data needs to be strongly protected from hackers... if medical insurance and banks are getting hacked and our personal information stolen... something is very wrong, needs to be addressed, and the stronger security needs to be carried into all companies involved with electronic data of any kind. Finally, not just for truckers, but we need a system that guarantees at least middle-class life for all citizens. If nothing else, out of self-interest of corporations... who is going to buy your products if nobody is working and having income they can spend?
