While I personally don't believe anyone's content is currently safe from certain scrapers, what these specific people are doing is blatant theft. I generally believe the technology has a lot of potential and genuine value, but I also believe the technology is exceptionally easy to abuse those who are lazy, or morally weak.
For example, you could have it write a paper for you in college, cheating,, or you could do the work yourself and ask an AI to review your work. If you're having trouble on a project, you could ask an AI to help re-explain the material, so you better understand it.. It doesn't have to be used to undermine hard-working individuals,, but I do believe many people will do that, but I blame the people doing so, not the technology. I think it's a bit like how guns are exceptionally dangerous, but they do the most harm in the hands of those who don't respect their power...
