If AI eliminates entry-level and junior white-collar jobs, then the traditional career ladder collapses at the bottom, leaving no way for people to gain experience and move up. No training ground remains. No human redundancy exists to catch errors. No pipeline feeds into future leadership and expert roles. To avoid this, companies will have to reintroduce structured learning roles, not because they’re needed for output, but to train future leaders. Like sponsored shadowing, simulation-based learning and AI-assisted mentorship. Though some junior roles may survive as "co-pilots" and AI auditors: people who learn by monitoring, prompting or correcting AI outputs. It is also very likely that training and assessment via realistic simulations, sandboxes or digital twins could replace some of the learning once done through actual work. Also expect a shift toward portfolios, certifications and competitions (like Kaggle for data science and hackathons) as proxies for experience. Short-term rotational access to “real work” environments under supervision (like medical residencies) might also become more common. Or some companies may deliberately carve out non-automated teams for strategic resilience and succession planning. Unless we completely rethink how people learn, grow and advance in a workplace with less actual “work” at the bottom, we will inevitably create a world where only the already-experienced (who also won't live and work forever) can lead and the rest are stuck in perpetual limbo or unemployment. It will require an intense intentional redesign of career structures to tackle this, not just technological fixes.
