I think the idea here is not really to remove humans from the equation. It's to remove humans who may have a conscience. Humans without a conscience will still program and deploy the "autonomous" weapons. And of course here I'm referring to the psychopathic ruling class and their minions who will act to retain their wealth and power at any cost. The ruling class has already shown that they could not care less about the well-being of the "unwashed masses". This development is not unexpected, at least in the US. The US will soon lose financial hegemony on the world stage and they know it, so they must work to maintain military superiority to ensure at least some kind of domination for as long as possible. It would be disastrous if real people were removed from any military-style enforcement of "order" at demonstrations within a country's borders. Popular uprisings often turn on the unwillingness of troops to use deadly force against their "brothers and sisters". When these agents of state control switch sides, the people win and the authoritarian rulers lose. It has happened before in history, but won't happen if people are replaced by unfeeling, uncaring robots.
