I am a Canadian engineer and community advocate. I support a medically complex adult who is effectively a “domestic immigrant” who practically has less rights than those who emigrate here. If we can’t figure out how to recognize the personhood of such a person who has slipped through the chasms of our system and only sees a glass ceiling when looking up then why are we spending so much energy on trying to debate AI personhood? An abundant society must support all those who need support and not at the expense of any other individual. If we can get our heads on straight and recognize how we have failed the untouchables among us, maybe then we would have the wisdom to wrestle with these concepts.
My personal belief is that the way we treat others (human or animal) says something about the kind of people we are. Perhaps that’s a good place to start.
