People tend to overestimate progress in the short term, but underestimate it in the long term. No one expected ChatGPT to be anywhere near as good as it was (a project which had been quietly in development for many many years).
But as soon as it was released, people expected it to improve year on year at a rate that was never going to pan out. In another 10-30 years there will probably be another breakthrough technology that no one could've previously imagined that will do lots of tasks, then people will expect it to grow year on year and do everything, and that simply won't happen.
