The problem is that copyright protects "original expressions of authors." "Author," in this case, only refers to human beings. I don't think this guy is trying to monetize AI art by any means, This copyright claim is moreso a "test case" to set a precedent for AI art being copyrightable int he future---an interesting yet problematic notion. Who knows what the future will hold.
