This is one of the most well thought out and articulated videos I’ve seen about AI/AI art. As someone who works in the industry training AI and creates art in my free time, I've grappled pretty extensively with the concept of where the line should be drawn. I think one interesting lens by which to view the whole situation is through the capitalistic structure we live in. Right now people are using AI (understandably so) to try to make money, to try to improve their material situation. As you acknowledged though, art is inherently spiritual/personal. Art has in some ways become productized/commoditized throughout time, but AI is just accelerating that. I tend to think AI is most beneficial when it ultimately improves standard of living, such as detecting cancer better than humans could, autonomous driving, etc. If these types of things become normalized over the next few decades (assuming we don’t send ourselves into a dystopia first) then unchosen/scarcity stress decreases. When scarcity, lack, and survival no longer become the primary operating mode for people, then creating will naturally become more rewarding than consuming. Once this happens AI art will lose its power because expression becomes the whole point. When we think of it that way, it makes sense why so many people are drawn to the Angel Engine account. The creator had a vision but not the resources to animate it alone. How many creative directors, writers, etc have made stories but don't know how to animate themselves, or don't know how to be an actor, yet their work has become the basis for phenomenal films. AI allowed the Angel Engine creator to manifest an idea that might have stayed locked in their head for years since they likely didn't have the money or the connections to pull it off. Being able to build with AI is also what connected them with another artist who might never have found them otherwise. Put more simply, AI democratizes creation. Lots of ideas will be terrible, sure, but others will be great and would never have existed without these tools. So I pose a final question: should creators be punished for lacking the money or time to build their vision the traditional way, or does AI actually bring us closer to our creative identities by giving us the means to realize it? AI art has real issues but it also allows people to express themselves in ways that only big studios/teams could execute before, and that will allow for the creation of a lot of really shitty ideas, but it will also enable the creation of some really great ones too.
