Automated taxies are the only technology that will finally put a dent in the amount of personal car ownership. Because public transit in N. America has been consistently *failing* at this for decades! Public transit is not getting any better anytime soon. Automated taxies provide door-to-door service that consumer in N. America crave because of the large expanse of N. American cities. Along with the dangers of riding public transit which is increasingly becoming dirty, dangerous and expensive. Personal car ownership is especially expensive when taking everything into consideration. You're paying for an asset that depreciates immediately and spends 95+% of its time parked! There are insurance expenses, fuel costs, maintenance, cleaning. When driving a vehicle, you run the risk of getting into accident that can turn into *criminal* charges if you're found using your phone or intoxicated—no amount of insurance can get you out of criminal charges. This can't happen when you're a passenger in a taxi. Finally, the parking issue is a major problem especially in busy downtown cores. Automated taxies remove this problem. In a larger context, as personal vehicle ownership declines, we could finally see a drop in parking lots. Parking lots are *not* good place in urban design.
