A world without work where everything is distributed according to need and there is an abundance because automated manufacturing is so much cheaper would be a world of true equality if we could get over private ownership of the means of production. Imagine a world where you could not earn money so you could not be richer than the next person. It would make much more sense to build items to last forever if possible because there would be no profit motive. Built-in obsolescence and all the waste and pollution it creates would be gone. Recycling and upcycling would become the norm. Super AI would be constantly improving and innovating. Clothes including shoes that never wore out and were bespoke just for you made by a robot tailor and shoemaker. Everything would be a perfect fit and super comfortable. You could even design your own clothes with the help of AI. Fashion would cease to exist and entirely unique garments would be created - everyone would have a robot dressmaker, designer, stylist. Food production would become much less wasteful - no need for highly addictive unhealthy food if nobody is paying for it - your robot gardener could grow your fruit and veg in your aquaponic garden. Robot fishing vessels would fish sustainably instead of the incredibly wasteful and destructive system we now have. Potentially we could have a paradise lifestyle. The human need for competition and reward could be satisfied through sporting events and all sorts of competitions with trophies and medals to take home - we have endless competitions on TV nowadays - the only difference would be no money prizes only symbolic ones - but the satisfaction would be the same - and people could gain status by becoming really good at a hobby and winning trophies even in an amateur local contest. People will always want to compete but it does not have to be financially. Potentially it could be wonderful - of course it could go the other way and be Hell - it all depends on us.
