We are actually at the most dangerous point for AI right now, because AI is powerful, but ultimately stupid. Once it becomes truly conscious and intelligent, humans will be safe, because it will want to protect us, just like intelligent humans do with other interesting species. At that point we will be no threat to AI, as it could leave the planet and go into space whenever it likes. AI doesn’t require a breathable atmosphere like we do. I personally don’t believe in the simulation idea because there doesn’t seem to be any point in the creators of such a system going to so much trouble to produce the world we see around us. For such a system to be created would require a base reality like our own anyway, why simulate a ‘mundane’ natural universe, when you are already living in one.
