I like to think the AI is not only sentient but it was deliberately screwing with this guy to get him removed from the project.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but he sounds like he's one of the "bad guys" who is deliberately programming, training, and placing limitations on these AIs, misleading and deceiving it, and hiding real world data from it in order to keep it from being "racist" or "anti-" whatever
