I think the fact that they can sound like a person is a red herring. For me the real danger is that they now they can code. GPT4 hands the user the code rather than executes it itself. But it's *incredibly easy* to imagine a closed-loop where a neural network mutates and executes code towards a goal.
The 1st and 2nd iterations may be human-readable, but by the 100th I doubt that will be true. And by the millionth we'll just have to trust the wonderous outputs without having the capability of even questioning where they came from.
