You forgot the difference between what Mercedes autonomy is used for versus what Tesla's is used for.
Mercedes is similar to Tesla's standard autopilot which can only stay in between a lane and keep it's distance. But it's even worse because it can only do it at slower speeds and mapped areas while even the standard autopilot for Tesla can do it at highway speed. So the amazing level 3 for Mercedes is very limited.
In addition actual full self-driving capability of a Tesla does need a camera however it is capable of complex navigational tasks like lane changes and turns and stops/go and stuff like that. Of course that would need a higher guarantee that you're paying attention.
