I never worked at Goldman Sachs. I didn't go to Stanford or Harvard. By the laws of Silicon Valley and Wall Street (the "Two Fat Ladies"), I'm unqualified to say this.
But I'm going to say it anyway.
Google has a problem. Not a competitive problem. An existential one.
And almost everyone is missing it. For years, we've judged tech giants on the wrong metrics. Revenue, P/E ratios, market share... these are tools for analyzing oil companies and railroads.
The tech industry is unique. It runs on a different logic. A company isn't a balance sheet; it's the physical manifestation of a "Thesis".

This is the only framework that matters. And Google's thesis, perfect for 20 years, has just been invalidated by AI. The prevailing "Blue Pill" narrative is that Google will just "do AI" and win. This is a catastrophic misreading of the situation.
The reality is a classic Innovator's Dilemma. Google is the new Kodak. Its search ad business is its high-margin "film." Generative AI is the "digital camera" its own researchers invented, but which the company is now terrified to fully embrace because it would ruthlessly slaughter their cash cow.
Their current AI strategy isn't innovation. It's a monstrous, self-defeating hybrid. A big snake trying to bite its own tail. In my native shona language we say, "Nyoka Huru Haizvirume" which translates to "A big snake doesn't bite itself" "If it's so obvious, why isn't Wall Street or Silicon Valley talking about it?"
Simple. The world has been asking the wrong people.
You don't ask your barber for financial advice. You don't ask the banker about the risks of taking a huge credit card to travel the world and go crazy shopping.
The tech media, VCs & software engineers are the barbers—experts in the last war. The incumbent tech CEOs are the bankers—incentivized to project confidence.
This has created a conspiracy of silence. I'm the child yelling that the Emperor is naked. The fundamental behavior of the internet is changing. The shallow, transactional act of "Googling" is being replaced by the deep, immersive act of "prompting."
It's the shift from channel-surfing to binge-watching.
This renders Google's greatest asset—its two decades of search data—a wasting one. It's a perfect database of a dead language. A Master of Latin in the Age of English. This is Google's BlackBerry Moment.
BlackBerry thought the battle was about the keyboard. They missed that the App Store was the new gateway.
Google thinks the battle is about the search box. They're missing that Agentic AI is the new gateway.
The threat isn't a better search engine. The threat is a world that no longer "searches." The market sees strong quarterly earnings and thinks the ship is unsinkable.
