Yes, the tech revolution will significantly impact many jobs. This video seems more concerned with protecting drivers' jobs and watching out for their interests than with the interests of the hundreds of millions of road-going Americans and their safety. 'We, the people' have an inherent interest in road safety. The Teamsters have an interest in dues-paying human truck drivers. Drivers have an interest in secure high-paying jobs. Which of these interests should be considered as trumping the others? This video implies that keeping thousands of people employed is more important than ensuring that millions of people are safe on the roads, since autonomous vehicles eliminate the humans who make "human errors" all the time. Does this tradeoff make sense to you? How many truck accidents happen purely due to equipment failing—brakes, tires, wheels, etc.—and how many truck accidents occur due to simple human error, drug use, alcohol, exhaustion, etc? Check the NHTSA and DOT numbers... We all know the answer to this one deep inside since most of us drive and have made mistakes on the road. Can autonomous systems make mistakes? Sure, but every mistake is a lesson learned by all the vehicles through the software, which makes it less likely to occur. Every transportation sector will benefit from autonomy in one way or another in the coming years. It is unfortunate that many drivers will lose their jobs, and more should be done to help them find new ones, but that is an unavoidable consequence of new technology radically changing our world [generally] for the better. Even if it means that the government must subsidize the drivers until they find better work with our tax dollars, that is better for everyone using the roads in the long run. This is not because human truck drivers are inherently bad, but instead because they share the same physical limitations as everyone else. An autonomous truck can keep driving 24/7 (subject to fuel and maintenance needs) and do so with zero degradation of driving ability and safety. Zero. A job that involves moving 50,000+ lbs at 65 mph next to your kids' minivan on the highway should utilize every safety advantage it can. Simply because road fatalities that can be avoided should be avoided.
